Cruise Control

“Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.” Colossians 3:2 (NKJV)

Paul here was telling people who had accepted Christ into their lives to set their minds on the things they needed to be thinking about which were of course--“things above.” After all, their lives were now hidden with Christ in God. Although good solid advice it's often difficult to carry out as the mind is the battlefield where Satan likes to play the most.

As nice as it would be to set our minds on cruise control heading straight for heaven, the road in life doesn’t permit that to happen. For every curve we come to in life, every bump along the way caused by earthly things such as divorce, financial difficulties, fear, failure, addictions, etc our minds go off cruise control and it begins to wonder. Then the choice becomes ours to get it up to speed once more in order to set it on the things Christ would want us mediating on.

Using the advice Paul gave in Romans 12:2 regarding renewing our minds daily, it can be done and done right. Taking control over our mind and not handing the reins over to Satan to manage is our decision. Years ago when I learned that 90% of my seizures were stressed cause I was given that alternative. Focus on the things above that brought peace or the things of earth that brought stress into my life resulting in seizures.

It’s never a battle that is easily won but one that comes with victory if we stick with it long enough. Leaning on the Lord for the strength and wisdom to carry it through. A day to day battle that by no means ends but one with a conclusion that far outweighs the struggle it took to get there.

Dear Heavenly Father thank you Lord for the good influence You have to offer in our battle with the mind. We have a choice to make on where we want our minds or thinking to go. Help us to make the correct decision to concentrate on the things above such as Your love, guidance, grace, mercy, peace here on earth in our hearts, and so much more. Forgive us for the times we allow a crack in our thinking where Satan sets up camp long enough to get us off, to where it takes determination and right choices to get us back to where we need to be. As much as it would be nice if You controlled our minds that’s not going to happen until we take the responsibility of making it happen. May we do it wisely in decisions that lead us to life eternal with You. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
